“How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” Isaiah 14:12 – 14
Come to think of it, Isaiah does not refer much to Satan, even though evidence of his wicked ways underlie every verse and every picture in the prophetic word.
However, I do believe that the Prophet’s description of the fall of an evil person or power described in Chapter 14 portrays very well the history and fate of Satan. He was a highly favored angel who decided to exalt himself in the heavenlies, even as a rival to God himself.
Hear him, “I will raise my throne above the stars of God. I will make myself like the Most High.” God had gifted him but did not exalt him, that he determined to do himself.
I think this is what Jesus referred to in Luke 10 when the seventy he had sent out returned from ministry of preaching, healing and spiritual deliverance. “The seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.’ And He said to them, ‘I was watching Satan fall from heaven like lightning.’” Luke 10:17, 18.
Our minds go to the Apostle John’s vision, “Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.” Rev. 12:7 – 9
Now, praise God, we live in the light of the marvelous Gospel that proclaims that Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil. It is not our doing, but his. Jesus is victor. He is Lord. Satan can no longer appear before God and slander us who are covered by the atoning work of Jesus. All those who have given their hearts to Jesus can conquer the threats of Satan here on the earth. All heaven will be there to defeat Satan for us. We live in the joy of Christ’s victory over the powers of evil, over Satan himself.
