Matthew 12:22
“Then they brought him a demon possessed man who was blind and mute.”
We might wish for more signs and wonders like we see here when Jesus healed instantly the man who was possessed by a demon that blinded him and rendered him mute, unable to express himself in any way. Jesus cast out the demon, then the poor fellow could speak and see in an instant. Onlookers were awe stricken.
One would have thought all who saw this dramatic healing would certainly believe that Jews was God among us. They asked, “Could this be the son of David?” The were getting close!
Among the onlookers were the Pharisees who, having seen the very same signs of exorcism and healing, concluded that “It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons.” They did not want to believe.
For those who are in Christ Jesus, life is full of signs of God’s grace. We love signs. But we must be careful lest we think that signs will convince nonbelievers to believe. I suppose the surest sign is that we believe in Jesus and all there is in him.
