“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love.”
John 15:9, 10
How much did the Father love Jesus? That stretches us beyond our limits. It is huge, beyond telling. Jesus says that the love that binds Him to God is a gift that is ours as a result of the New Birth.
I stand again before God’s description of love, his love! Here he emphasizes the importance of keeping God’s commandments. That shows that we love Him. If we truly believe in God, we are eager to obey his commandments.
We believe in God’s love, not our own!
Believers abide, not in their own love, but in the love of God. That love bond is so strong that believers desire, deeply, the unchanging desire to obey God in all ways. It is not our way of getting what we want from God but of our desire to be at one with God himself. That relationship trumps everything else, far more compelling than a desire for divine blessings. It is our very connection with God, Christ and the Holy Spirit.
Our example is, of course, Jesus Christ. Think of what obedience to the Father meant to him. Can we expect a different road?
