White as snow!

“Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. “

Isaiah 1:18

Yesterday, a week before Thanksgiving, we got our first snow of the season – about five inches.  Once again, I was amazed to see how a heavy blanket of snow, like this one, changes the landscape so much.  It covers everything.  Everything is white and fresh.  What is underneath is not seen, but the whiteness of the covering is startling.  Nothing changes the landscape quite like a snow like this.  The first snow of the season blesses me.  It reminds me of the grace of God whose light covers all sin in the life of a believer, like me.  The Bible speaks of this directly or indirectly over a hundred times.

As I recall from my Physics class, what appears to us as white is in fact not an absence of color but all colors together, producing the illusion that white is a single color when in fact it is all colors.  When the Bible, in dozens of passages, uses the image of snow it points to cleansing, purity, beauty and a host of other responses.

So, my mind focuses on this reminder of God’s saving grace in Jesus.  It reminds me that I am covered by this brilliant light that outshines all others, the light of Jesus Christ.  Lord, thank you.  When you see me, you see me cleansed and made pure white by the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, our Savior.
