Anna Ruth, bless her heart and her fingers, produced several jars of these delightful snacks.  We call them pepper nuts.  I think they are “pfeffernüsse” in German where the goodies originated.  This is an annual treat at our place – for Thanksgiving and Christmas. A tradition beloved by family and lucky friends.
