Moses and Jesus Christ

Revelation 15:2, 3

“They held harps given them by God and sang the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb.”

I like to think that these two songs, that of Moses and that of the Lamb (Jesus Christ) are two of the verses in God’s grand hymnal. All hymns arise from these two authors, Moses and Jesus. We recall the songs of Moses who rescued Israel from slavery in Egypt, who walked with them and with God in the wilderness of Sinai, constantly interceding for their salvation and well-being,  Through him came the Law that provided Israel with a way to think about and to walk with God.  His hymn has many verses, the first of the five books of our Bible, for example. King David and other hymn writers blessed us with many, many songs that amplify the glory of God and his unexpected and unbelievable offer of salvation, grace and mercy, along with commandments that stress the truth of the unalterable ways of God.

So it was with Moses and those who followed him. The Old Testament is built upon the power and mercies of God in heaven, each verse of the ancient hymn returns to the mighty themes of God as the Creator and Savior.

Then “new songs” began to fill the heavens and the earth. We have seen how that “new song” thrilled and grounded the followers of Jesus.  Of course, Jesus wrote the “new song” in our hearts.  We hear the refrain, “Great and marvelous are your deeds, Lord God Almighty. Just and true are your ways, King of the ages.”  v 15:4  And then the inclusion of all who know and follow the Lamb.  The short song,15:4, amazes us for it offers salvation for all who believe and those who will believe, “All nations will come and worship before you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”

Moses’ hymnal appealed to Israel. Jesus “hymnal”  appeals to all, every tribe and nation.  I see no disparity between the two, they are both a clear expression of God’s mighty saving grace for all – Jews and everyone else!
