Revelation 14:4, 5
“They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among men and offered as first fruits of God and the Lamb. No lie was found in their mouths, they are blameless.”
I have no idea who these 140,000 are, someday I hope to know. However, I am convinced that they represent all in whom the Lord Jesus lives and has sway. Let’s ponder this.
“They sang a new song.” v 3 The “new song” theme keeps recurring in this entire Revelation – it seems like all heaven sings this “new song” when praise breaks out there. That does not mean that the old songs are not good and profitable. I think it means that there is a spontaneous eruption of praise and thanksgiving that transports the worshiper in the heavens where new things are constantly happening. Old words take on new meaning, old expressions get filled with new knowledge and wisdom.
This “new song” of heaven describes what is happening among the sons of man, those who “follow the Lamb wherever he goes.” v 4 The eyes of heaven are on them, rejoicing when they see the faithful followers of the obedient Lamb wherever he goes. This is contrary to the normal shepherding vocation, and to human nature, where the lambs just follow, never even thinking of leading. It would seem absurd when we think what would happen if sheep and shepherds follow the weak, unknowing lamb. That is not a good thought. But it is exactly the picture here.
God’s exalted Lamb followed God across green pastures, through flooded water, through unnumbered dangers. We see Jesus following his Father no matter what, even to death as our sacrifice for sin. I must never forget that as Jesus followed his Father, that is exactly what is expected of me. Seeing obedience, heaven sings their “new song.”
Who are the followers of the Lamb? People like you and me, “purchased from among men and offered…to God and the Lamb.” v 4 Jesus Christ paid the price of our redemption and his Father called us out to be Lamb-followers! I find that to be very humbling yet glorious beyond words. I am one of them as are you.
