He Sees Everything!

Revelation 1:14

“His eyes were like blazing fire.”

“Doesn’t God see the terrible things that are happening?” “Is God blind to my distress?” I find that I ask such questions. I doubt that Jesus sees my situation, I conclude. Then, receiving no answer to those question I move further into doubt by asking, “If you know how I am struggling, then, pray tell, why don’t you do something about it? Can you not still the threatening waves that are drowning me?”

I place myself in one of the churches there, say Smyrna, and find that as the Emperor of Rome is determined to wipe out Christianity nothing seems to stop him. He and the Empire are intent on destroying faith and the church itself. I hear them say, “They have taken our beloved John from us. We are alone now, and the threats against us are becoming horrifying realities.  Our Jesus, do you not see what is happening here?  Unless you step in we will be destroyed.”

This is not a plight peculiar to John’s time, it is my plight as I press on in face of spiritual opposition.  I, too, am tempted to ask, “Jesus, don’t you see?”

If John was nursing such thoughts he must have been impressed by Jesus’ eyes in  the vision before him. Not only were those eyes seeing everything, absolutely everything from the suffering of the saints to the arrogance of the haughty Roman Emperor, they discerned every motive, every action that pitted Christianity against Emperor worship  They never closed.  Jesus’ watchfulness over his followers is more constant than the rotation of the earth or the appearance of the daily sun.

Truly Jesus is the “All-Seeing One.”  “His eyes were like blazing fire.” v 14
