Matthew 27:25
“Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.'”
In my mind, the offering of the sacrifice of blood is at the very core of Jesus’ atoning work. This is the centerpiece of the New Covenant that God promised in Jeremiah 31 and other places in the prophetic promises. As the blood of the sacrificed lamb promised forgiveness of sin in the Old Covenant, so the blood of God’s Son, the Lamb of God, needs only to be received and applied by guilty sinners for the removal of sin.
The blood of Jesus made the New Covenant possible. Therefore we are invited to sit among the disciples and hear those words of Jesus that sends waves of delight through the heavens, “This is my blood of the covenant.” v 24 As it is in heaven, so should it be, so is it, on the earth.
“It is,” Jesus said, “poured out for many.” We are, I am, in that “many” even though a Gentile, not a Jew, yet bought, cleansed and sealed by the same blood – Jesus’ blood, the blood of the New Covenant, now in force.
How can we keep from singing?
