Matthew 16:22
“Son of Man.”
Let us reread verse 16 of this chapter. “Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Christ, the son of the living God.'” That confession pleased Jesus for that is exactly who he is. He is unequivocally the Son of God.
But we must never forget that Jesus is also Son of Man. This is highlighted in the last section of this chapter where Jesus, once again speaks with that same Peter. I suppose Peter was trying to be consistent with his confession that Jesus is the Christ when upon hearing Jesus describe how he must soon suffer at the hands of evil people in Jerusalem he protested, “Never, Lord. This shall never happen to you.” Peter and all of us must recognize that Jesus is Son of God but also Son of Man.
Is this not my problem as well? I sincerely say that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Master, even sing songs confirming it. Then when that very Jesus asks me to do something that I dread doing, I find myself squirming and uncomfortable, with little faith.
So, how does Jesus shape a disciple? On thing is sure, He never changes. No arguing with him will convince him to act contrary to himself. He laid this out before Peter and the other disciples. “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” v 24 In saying this, Jesus is declaring that he is both Son of God and Son of Man. As I write this I realize that I stand before a mystery. Who can begin to describe the Atonement where the Son of God/Son of Man was crucified and where he was raised from the dead as both? As with all the saints, we bow and ponder. Who can fully comprehend all this?
