Matthew 12:38

“Teacher. we want to see a miraculous sign from you.”

How could it be that the Pharisees and teachers of the law are asking for yet another sign? Maybe they heard that he cast out the evil spirit that was bothering the man who could neither speak nor hear, now could do both. Maybe they wanted to make sure that is what really happened. The truth of the matter was that they already decided that Jesus was empowered by Satan so no matter what sign he might perform they had already prejudged him – they were convinced that he was doing the will of Satan. Or it could be that among the teachers of the Jews were sincere seekers, like Nicodemus.

Jesus knew that signs and wonders are not convincing if people have already decided that Jesus is empowered by Satan as is the case here. Because of their mistaken impression of who Jesus is they missed out on a cosmic event Jesus just explained. “If I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”  Now, that is cosmic news! The purpose of Jesus’ ministry was to establish a new and abiding kingdom, the kingdom the Triune God. This is a new or renewed reality on the face of the earth. He announced its coming here again, in a most emphatic way.

Jesus knew that people who are closed to the the fact that Jesus is God in the flesh cannot be convinced by yet another miracle, certainly not one they that demand that Jesus must perform for them.
