Jesus Sends His Disciples

Matthew 10:5

“These twelve Jesus sent out.”

Jesus called these 12 to love him, of course, and to proclaim to the world the coming of the Kingdom of God.

I think this records the first “official” sending of the 12.  Jesus gave them clear instructions – to use the authority that they are given to take the message of the Kingdom to the Jews, only.  Jesus calls the Jews “lost sheep.”  He had compassion on them as the Good Shepherd.  They needed to know that God loved them and that they, as God’s chosen people, are a precious flock in the sight of God in heaven.

The 12 were authorized and empowered to heal the sick and to exorcise evil spirits.  Jesus reminds them, “Freely you have received, freely give.”  It is all by grace.  They were called, they were empowered, they were given a message, – “The kingdom of God is near.”  They were called to voice the words of Jesus and to do his will.  This is amazing.  They are not strong group.  They could barely begin to understand the cosmic significance of their calling. So it is with us. Truly, all is by the initiative of God.

These 12 men were caught up in the mighty purposes of God. They were thrilled and excited, no doubt.
