The Good News of the Kingdom

Matthew 9:35

In light of this growing gap Jesus pressed on – from village to town. He had an earth-shaking ministry.  As a Jewish man he had certain rights to speak in the synagogues – so he used that opportunity to teach and preach. Matthew wrote three chapters already – 5, 6 and 7 – that are chuck full of Christ’s teaching, each precept as sharp as a sword. Amazing teaching, indeed, teachings that gave his proclamation about the coming of the Kingdom some substance.  He spoke of the ways and wisdom of the saving God.

I note that Jesus taught but he also preached, that is, he proclaimed something that was the context of his entire life, “the Good News of the Kingdom.” Matthew left it at that.  We might well ask, what is this kingdom? Why is it central to Jesus’ life and ministry? What Jesus proclaimed is not unpacked for us. Matthew knew that in order to begin to understand the essence of the Kingdom, we need to ponder the entire life, death and resurrection of Jesus. For now, it remains the one greatest mystery. What is Jesus talking about? It is important for us to know because it is the central reality of God’s work of mercy and grace among mankind. It is understood – it is not understood. Jesus knew that. Yet he was insistent on announcing that the Kingdom of God is being established and is open to all who embrace the life and work of Jesus Christ. So, read on, gentle reader!
