Matthew 9:35 “Jesus went through all the towns and villages.”  People were talking.  What this man from Nazareth was doing was astounding. The people had never seen anything like it. This Jesus cast out demons, healed the sick, forgave sin – and spoke the words that set things upside-down, so to speak.

It is clear that they did not agree on who Jesus is, but it does appear as though the ordinary people rushed to him while those who lives consisted in studying the Law of Moses could not fit Jesus into any of their thought or theological categories. For them he was an enigma that could only be explained by assuming that he was a servant of Satan no matter what he claimed about himself. So a chasm opened between those who believed he was from God and those who concluded that he was the enemy of God.

Little has changed since then. It seems as though no culture or religion can truly love and embrace Jesus because he simply does not fit into their previously accepted world-view.
